Regulations should be designed to evolve with the technology, including regular review periods and mechanisms for incorporating new research findings. International coordination is essential too, since AI doesn't respect borders.
The Path Forward
We need regulation that protects people from real harms without imposing unnecessary burdens that slow beneficial innovation. That means being specific about what problems we're solving, basing rules on actual evidence, and involving diverse voices in the regulatory process - not just tech companies and government officials, but also workers, researchers, ethicists, and affected communities.
The AI revolution is coming whether we regulate it or not. The question is whether we'll guide it thoughtfully or let it unfold haphazardly. Smart government intervention focused on genuine risks, designed with flexibility, and informed by broad input can help ensure that AI serves humanity rather than the other way around.
